HALINÁ Modern Filipino Kitchen + Bar: A Good First Stop for Filipino Food

Filipino cuisine is one of the most globally influenced in the world and still one of the least understood, as Halina puts it on its own website. This modern Filipino kitchen and bar in Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood makes a point of explaining its food, which makes it a good place to try it for the first time.

Food With a History

Halina’s website traces how Filipino cooking was shaped by trade and travel, with Spanish, Chinese, American and Japanese influences layered onto the islands’ own traditions. The result, in the restaurant’s words, is food that tastes complex yet comforting and is meant to be shared, not rushed.

The restaurant was started by four friends who first ran a takeout and catering business called Bigboy’s Chigs To-Go, and it blends Filipino tradition with Canadian ingredients.
